Chapa MS Director
Mr. Smith is entering into his third year of teaching in the Buda/Kyle community and his first year as Head Band Director at Chapa Middle School. As a Director for the Cougar Band Mr. Smith conducts the Wind Ensemble and teaches the Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone and Tuba beginner classes.
Prior to becoming a teacher in Hays CISD, Mr. Smith attended Texas State University where he graduated in May 2010 with a Bachelor’s in Music Education, Magna Cum Laude. While at Texas State, Mr. Smith was a member of the Bobcat Marching Band, the Wind Ensemble, the Symphony Orchestra, and the Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble. He served in many capacities in these ensembles including Section Leader, Drum Major, Visual and Field Coordinator, Principal Tuba, and Band Manager.
He is a member of Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, International Tuba and Euphonium Association, Alpha Chi Honor Society, Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society, Golden Key Honor Society, and Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Fraternity for College Bands.
Mr. Smith enjoys bay fishing, watching Spurs basketball, and playing his PS3. He has been married to his wife, Alyssa, for 6 years. Mrs. Smith teaches 1st Grade in Austin ISD. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have a baby girl named Adalyn.
Chapa MS Associate Director
Ms. Janek is entering into her fifth year of teaching. Prior to becoming the Assistant Band Director at Chapa Middle School, Ms. Janek spent four years in Lockhart ISD, and several summers teaching cymbal lines from Pflugerville down to Laredo. As a Director for the Cougar Band, Ms. Janek conducts the Symphonic Band and teaches the Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Saxophone, and Percussion beginner classes. She is a member of Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, International Double Reed Society, Percussive Arts Society, and Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Fraternity for College Bands. Prior to becoming a music educator, Ms. Janek attended Texas State University and received a Bachelor’s in Music Education in 2009. While at Texas State, Ms. Janek was a member of the Bobcat Marching Band, Bobcat Drumline, Bobcat Basketball Band, the Wind Ensemble, the Symphony Orchestra, and the Double Reed Ensemble. She served in many capacities in these ensembles including Section Leader and Principal Bassoon, and was a recipient of the Clara Freshour Nelson Music Scholarship. She participated in several Concerto Competitions throughout the state of Texas and was a finalist in the Mid-Texas Symphony Concerto Competition. Ms. Janek enjoys road and mountain biking, visiting family in Dallas, cooking, and watching Cowboys football. Ms. Janek has the best dog ever, Samantha aka “Sammie”, who is a 5 year old yellow labrador retriever.
