Ponderings From the Podium

Everyone seems to think that once marching band is over in November that things will slow down for the Lobo Band program.  This could not be any farther from the truth!  🙂  The spring semester is easily the busiest part of the year for the students and directors.  Here is a quick recap of what is happening in the world of the Lobo Band:

This week – February 21-27:  the band program is alive with activity, performances and tons of volunteer hours for our students.  Saturday has two major events taking place with the first being the WGI Austin Regional Contest, hosted by the Lobo Band and Winter Guard.  There are more that 50 winter guards competing in this prelims & finals event.  This is one of the largest events that the Lobo Band Program hosts.  We reserve the entire Lehman High School campus and use almost every classroom, all gyms, band-hall, cafeteria, library and every other available space.  It is a great day filled with the excitement and pageantry of incredible color guards, as well as the hustle and bustle of a very busy business side of things with vendors, concessions and ticket sales.  It is no small event!    The second major event happening on Saturday is the 5th grade instrument drive.  The is the time that all 5th grade students that are scheduled to attend one of the Lehman HS feeder middle schools get to tryout all of the instruments in order to choose what they will play in 6th grade band this fall.  The instrument drive is an all day event with close to 400 5th grade students getting to hold and attempt to make their first sounds on any instrument they want.  It is a day full of excitement from the students as they try to choose their future instrument and many of those ever so popular first time sounds will fill the gym!!!  The 5th grade instrument drive is being held in the gym and Kimbro building on the Kyle Elementary Campus!  8:00 AM through 5:00 PM.

Another part of the busy schedule for the spring are the various student performances.  We are less than two months into the spring semester and we have already had the TMEA Region 18 Band Clinic and Concert, the TMEA Area D Auditions, the UIL Region 18 South Zone Solo and Ensemble Contest where 58 of our Lobo Band students earned and brought home 1st Division (Superior) Ratings and Medals!!!!  We have had multiple guest clinicians and consultants as part of our weekly rehearsals as well as our students arriving before or staying after school for sectionals and having full band rehearsals after school weekly!

UIL Concert and Sight-reading is rapidly approaching and here are a few of the things our staff and students are doing in preparation for this big event!   The Lobo Band will host a TMF Pre-UIL Festival at the Hays PAC where we will have over 20 bands from the Austin – San Antonio area perform for an outstanding panel of judges.  The Lobo Bands will not only host this event but will also be participants and receive critiques from the three adjudicators and a short clinic from a guest conductor immediately following their performance during that event.  This TMF festival will be held March 23rd and 24th with the Lobo Bands performances being on the morning of the 23rd.

So Many Things To Do List

Immediately following the TMF festival the Lobo Bands will put on a joint Concert with the Hays HS Bands in further preparation for UIL Concert and Sight-reading.  The two high school band programs will bring a combined total of 10 bands (5 from each school) to this concert.  Additionally the Lehman and Hays Band Directors have hired 4 incredibly talented and respected adjudicators to provide them with feedback based upon the performances at that concert.  This concert will be held at the PAC on Thursday evening, March 24th beginning at 5:00 PM at the Hays CISD PAC.  Yes that is correct, the Lobo Band will Host a Pre-UIL festival over a time span of two days and will also give 2 full performances of their UIL Program to a total of 8 adjudicators.  Who says we slow down after marching season!!!

The big day, or shall we say “days” of UIL Concert and Sight-reading arrive in the second week of April.  As with so many things the Lobo Band is the host for this event.  Just so you know the Lobo Band chooses to host every event we can; this means we can ensure that it is run the Lehman Way, which is the best way!  🙂   UIL Concert and Sight-reading will be held April 11th, 12th & 13th at the Hays CISD PAC with 4 of our Lobo Bands performing at their scheduled times (TBD).  During that same week of UIL the Lobo Band Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony will travel to San Antonio on Saturday April 16th, to compete in the Director’s Choice: Alamo Showcase of Music.

WOW UIL is finally over and we can breathe!!!   Well we can take a break for about an hour because the busiest part of the year begins that very next Monday morning!!!  Immediately following our UIL performances the Lobo Band kicks into high gear with multiple overlapping goals.  We have to finish the year strong with our end of the year concert, celebrate our successes at our phenomenal Formal Band Banquet, send off our wonderful seniors and all at the same time start the FALL 2016-2017 MARCHING SHOW process!  We must interview and select next year’s SLT (Student Leadership Team), ensure that we get the visual portion of the show developed and completed by our visual team and drill writer Mr. Tom Acheson, get our music for the new show arranged by our outstanding music composer/arranger Mrs. Carol Chambers, meet with and begin the process of introducing this year’s 8th grade band members to the wonderful world of marching band, test every band student (including the 8th graders) and place them in the appropriate chair order and band class for the fall, continue the rehearsals for various concerts and the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest at the University of Texas, and finally prepare and perform the Lehman High School graduation ceremony held at Texas State University!  Oh and I forgot to mention that we are hosting 4 music festivals as fund raisers in San Antonio during this same time frame!!!!!

This is to give you an idea of just how lucky we are to have our awesome Lobo Band students and staff!!  Graduation happens on Wednesday June 1st to bring the 2015-2016 school year to a close and Summer Band’s Spring Training begins, with all Lobo Band and Color Guard, on June 2nd!  So begins the next phase of our musical circle!!!!

Circle to Success
